Champions League results: Arsenal 0-2 Bayern Munich, Milan 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Arsenal’s fate in the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich last night was almost identical to the one Manchester City had on Tuesday against Barcelona. Fair contest before an early red card and one way traffic in the second half.

The Gunners started well against holding champions but things went wrong when Mesut Ozil failed to convert a penalty 8 minutes into the game. It was on 37 minutes when Arjen Robben burst into the box and was knocked down by Wojciech Szczesny. Referee Nicola Rizzoli opted to send the goalkeeper off which eventually put the game to bed. Arsene Wenger took off Santi Cazorla to let Lukasz Fabianski on the pitch, reducing the team’s atacking options to Yaya Sanogo. David Alaba missed from the spot which gave hope for London fans. However, Arsenal were never going to create a single chance being one man down against Bayern Munich and preferred to struggle in their own box. Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller did break the defence before the end of the match and Bayern Munich have made a huge step into quarterfinals.

AC Milan, who struggle in Serie A, produced an improved performance in Champions League against Primera leaders Atletico Madrid, but still conceded a late header from Diego Costa and lost their home leg.
