Chelsea Courtois wants to stay at Atletico for one more season

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is reportedly willing to extend his loan stay at Vicente Calderon for one more season, after spending two years with Atleti.

The highly-rated 21-year-old Belgian believes that return to Chelsea, where he will be used in a backup role behind first number Petr Cech, will damage his chances of earning call-up to Belgium national team ahead of World Cup. Courtois has impressed both the fans and the coaching staff at Vicente Calderon with his outstanding performances, helping his side to win Copa del Rey trophy with a win over Real Madrid.

Courtois said: “I have told Chelsea I want to stay at Atletico and I’ve told Chelsea this and hope it will be signed this week. Cech is a big keeper and I don’t want to be sitting on the bench in a World Cup year. It’s totally my choice and I’ve not spoken to (Jose) Mourinho about it. But I think the club has confidence in me to come back in a year’s time.”
