Confederations Cup results: Italy triumph over Japan in goal bonanza to progress to semi-final

Italy qualified for Confederations Cup semi-final after outscoring Japan 4-3 in an entertaining encounter in Recife.

Japan dominated the opening half and deservedly scored two goals before the break. Honda broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 21st minute and Kagawa extended Japan lead in the 33rd minute. However Squadra Azzurra managed to pull one back courtesy of De Rossi’s header from Pirlo’s delivery.

Italy were slightly better in the second half, but the game could go either side. Uchida then suffered an agony of scoring own goal in the 50th minute. There was a controversy, as referee awarded a penalty for handball when the ball strike Hasebe’s leg and bounced against his arm. Balotelli kept a cool head to convert the penalty in the 52nd minute to give Italy the lead for the first time in the game. Japan equalized 17 minutes later, as Okazaki netted a header from a free-kick. And yet Italy managed to claw the victory, as Giovinco scored from close range late in the game.

The result means Italy have booked themselves a place in the semi-final, while Japan were eliminated.
