Confederations Cup results: Suarez breaks Uruguay all-time goal scoring record, as La Celeste demolish Tahiti; Spain outplay Nigeria (video highlights)
Luis Suarez scored a brace to become Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, and Hernandez netted four, as the CONMEBOL champions booked the place in the semi-finals with a 8-0 demolition of minnows Tahiti.
Abel Hernandez got Uruguay off to a flying start with a fine header from Lodeiro’s corner in the second minute. Hernandez doubled Uruguay lead in the 24th minute, while Perez made it 3-0 with a tap in on the rebound, after his header hit off the post in the 27th minute. Palermo forward completed his hat-trick right before the final whistle after Gargano’s great through pass.
Uruguay were down to ten men after Scotti was shown red card in the 51st minute. Tahiti’s man advantage lasted only 8 minutes, as Ludivion was sent to an early shower after earning his second yellow in the 58th minute. Lodeiro netted fifth for Uruguay in the 61st minute, while Hernandez grabbed his fourth from a penalty spot to make it 6-0. Then substitute Suarez netted 35th and 36th goals for Uruguay to break Forlan’s record and round off his side’s victory.
The result means Uruguay have progressed to the semi-finals, where they will face Brazil.
Elsewhere, Nigeria were eliminated from the tournament after losing 3-0 to mighty Spain.
