Confederations Cup results: Tahiti score their debut goal, but get thrashed by Nigeria

Tahiti were dismantled 6-1 by Nigeria in their debut Confederations Cup, though the amateur did manage to score their first ever goal in a major international tournament.

Jonathan Tehau, who is working as a delivery driver in his home country, became the first ever player to score the goal at both ends, as he headed in for Tahiti in the 54th minute, before sending the ball past his own keeper in the 69th minute.

The sloppy amateur Tahiti defense predictably failed to cope with the pacey and technically gifted Nigeria attackers. They suffered a horrendous opening 30 minutes of the game, as the African champions tore their Tahiti’s defense into pieces. First Vallar found his own net in the 5th minute of the game Oduamadi extended Nigeria lead 5 minutes later and added the third on a half-hour mark. Then Tahiti clawed one back courtesy of Jonathan Tehau close-range header to record their first ever goal in a major international tournament. Then Tehau suffered a humiliation of scoring an own goal 15 minutes later, before Oduamadi completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute and Echiejile rounded off his side’s scoring.

Tahiti coach Eddy Etaeta admitted the final score reflected Nigeria’s dominance throughout the game, but said, that scoring debut goal is a great achievement for Tahiti: “To lose 6-1 is hard but you have to put it in context. We are an amateur side playing against professionals and of course that showed. But when the draw was made in December I said if we scored one goal here it would be a great achievement and we have accomplished that.”

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi paid homage to amateur Tahiti side, stating: “They (Tahiti) said they were going to fight like lions and they did. But, with all respect to Tahiti, you think it’s going to be easy playing against a team like that but they showed us they can play football and I congratulate them. We wasted a lot of chances in the first half but I am pleased we got the goals in the end.”
