EURO 2020 could be staged in 12 countries
UEFA President Michel Platini suggested the radical alternative to the practice of staging major tournaments in one or two countries. According to the Frenchman, ‘The Euros in 2020 could be held all over Europe. It could be either one country and 12 stadiums or one stadium in 12 or 13 cities.’
Platini recognized that the necessity to change the UEFA EURO 2020 concept is aroused by the expansion of the tournament. The participation of 24 teams instead of 16 would make the organization of tournament too costly for one or two countries.
UEFA executive committee will discuss the idea in December, while the final decision on the concept of EURO 2020 will be made early next year. Platini revealed that the idea to delegate the organization of the tournament to half of dozen countries ‘will be discussed very seriously.’
