Europa League Fixtures' Preview: Tottenham vs Lazio etc.

Europa League Fixtures' Preview: Tottenham vs Lazio etc.

Despite the disappointing early exit at the Europa League Group Stage last year, Tottenham are the comfortable favorites of the current UEFA Europa League season. The Spurs need to progress beyond the current stage in order to live up to minimum expectations in this season’s Europa League. Lazio, which are the 5th in the Italian Serie A, will certainly provide stern opposition for the London side.

The victory at the Stadio Olimpico can book either side the place in the knockout round. Currently Lazio is topping the Group J with eight points from four games, while The Spurs are on the second spot with six points. In the Matchday 4 the Roman side claimed 3-0 victory over the big underdogs Panathinaikos, while Londoners beat Maribor 3-1, thanks to Defoe’s hat-trick.
What concerns the form of both teams in domestic competitions, Lazio outplayed 3-2 their bitter rivals Roma and escaped with a 0-0 draw from the clash with the Serie A pacesetters Juventus. Tottenham have recently suffered two straight defeats against Premier League leaders Man City (1-2) and Arsenal (2-5) and slipped to the eighth place in the Premier League table. It is hardly surprising, that after such a poor start André Villas-Boas is under fire. The match against Lazio may prove to be decisive for his future.

Younes Kaboul and Benoit Assou-Ekotto will definitely miss Thurday’s clash due to injuries, while Scott Parker and Mousa Dembele have returned to training just recently.

Both clubs will be doing everything they can to ensure victory.

Here are the likely line ups, according to goal.com:

Lazio: Marchetti, Konko, Ciani, Biava, Radu, Cana, Ledesma, Gonzalez, Hernanes, Ederson Zarate.

Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Lennon, Huddlestone, Sandro, Bale, Dempsey, Adebayor.
