Europa League preview: Fenerbahce vs Lazio

Europa League preview: Fenerbahce vs Lazio

The Italians approach the clash against Fenerbahce as outright favorites.

While the Old Lady are on the brink of leaving the Champions League after a 2-0 defeat to Bayern, Italy is looking with hope at Lazio who attempt to progress further in the Europa League playing against Fenerbahce on Tuesday. The Capital club officials claimed earlier that the title of the tournament is the side’s priority this season, which is pretty unusual for Serie A teams that eye the competition as less significant than domestic one and are happy to exit the league as early as possible.

Lazio head coach Vladimir Petkovic is also determined to bring silverware to the trophy cabinet, underlining that the team will fight for the Italian Cup and the Europa League this term. The club started well in the competition finishing first in the group with likes of Tottenham and Panathinaikos. Later the side cruised past Borussia Moenchengladbach and Stuttgart in the knockout stage, displaying an effective attacking football. Overall the Biancocelesti have an impressive +13 goal difference in the league, outscoring the opponents 19-6.

Fenerbahce is by no means an easy rival for the Italians, as the Canaries stand second in the domestic league four points behind Galatasaray. The Turks boast some very good players including Dirk Kuyt, Volkan Demirel, Milos Krasic and Reto Ziegler. Vladimir Petkovic’s men will play the second leg behind closed bars and that may also make its impact on the club, but still look like one of clear trophy contenders.
