Europa League results: Newcastle 1-1 Benfica

Europa League results: Newcastle 1-1 Benfica

Newcastle have been eliminated from Europa League after being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Benfica at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies were trailing by two goals after a 3-1 first-leg defeat in Lisbon and were determined to deliver a fight against the excellent Portuguese side. Alan Pardew urged his players to match Barcelona, as this was the only side to beat Benfica by two clear goals this season. Papis Cisse has given Newcastle fans a hope of overturning the deficit by scoring a header with 20 minutes to go and had one goal disallowed for offside. However Salvio’s goal in the dying stages of the game broke Newcastle’s hearts and booked Benfica a place in the semi-finals.

The Magpies’ European campaign ended with a 4-2 defeat on aggregate, with Jorge Jesus’ boys never looked like losing.
