Flamengo to bid for Wolfsburg Diego

Flamengo declared interest in signing Wolfsburg’s playmaker Diego, though his high salary could be a stumbling block in the negotiations.

The 28-year-old Brazil international has been one of few bright spot in Wolfsburg’s otherwise unremarkable 2010-2011 Bundesliga campaign. He netted 10 goals in 32 outings to help his side narrowly avoiding relegation. Diego spent a season on loan at Atletico Madrid, after he fell out of favour with Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath.

In the wake of Magath’s revelations the player has no future at the club, Diego has been linked with a move to a host of European clubs. However now it seems Flamengo could steal the talented playmaker from under the opponents’ noses.

Flamengo vice-president Wallim Vasconcellos said: “Diego is an excellent player. However, the information we have shows that he currently has a very high salary. We will listen to the manager [former Brazil coach Mano Menezes], and if he wants Diego we will find out how much we would need to spend in the negotiations.”
