Fletcher, Cattermole injury woe for Sunderland
Sunderland’s hopes of retaining Premier League status this season suffered a major blow with the news their key players Lee Cattermole and Steven Fletcher have been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injuries.
Firm first-choice striker Steven Fletcher has suffered an ankle ligament injury during Scotland’s home 2-1 defeat to Wales. Sunderland’s over-reliance on Fletcher in the early stages of the season has become proverbial, with the 26-year-old striker scoring 11 goals in 28 Premier League appearances. That said the absence of the Scot would hit hard the struggling Black Cats.
Skipper Lee Cattermole has undergone surgery on his knee. His recovery is likely to take the remainder of the season.
According to the statement on Sunderland official website: “Cattermole underwent an operation on his knee and Fletcher sustained ankle ligament damage whilst on international duty with Scotland. It is not known at this stage if Fletcher will require an operation, with the injury requiring further assessment in the coming weeks. Both players will play no further part in the Black Cats’ 2012-13 Barclays Premier League season.”
