The Uruguayan coach Gus Poyet has been given an extension to his contract with The Black Cats after keeping the club in Premier League following a take-over from Paolo Di Canio. Poyet was called up last October and managed to drag the club out of relegation with a astunning four-match winning run in April and May, including victories against Chelsea and Manchester United. He also took Sunderland to League Cup final, where they lost to Manchester City. Following the signing of a new deal, Poyet told the media:

“I am delighted to extend my stay with Sunderland AFC, after an unbelievable season and our famous great escape.
“Now it’s a different challenge for me and the club and I am relishing the next stage with Sunderland. We achieved so much last season, working together - the club and the fans - and we took many good memories from the season”.
