International friendlies’ results: Spain beat Ireland, Italy held to a draw by Haiti

Spain battled to a well-deserved 2-0 victory over stubborn Republic of Ireland, in a thrilling game in New York.

Spain, as has been expected, dominated the possession throughout the game, with their silky midfield trio Iniesta-Silva-Xavi creating numerous chances. However the attackers’ profligacy meant World Cup holders have to wait until the 68th minute before breaking the deadlock.

Roberto Soldado came off the bench to open the scoring, while Juan Mata rounded off Spain scoring two minutes before the time, minutes after Republic of Ireland had the goal disallowed for offside. Though the majority of Ireland’s threats coming from the set-pieces, they delivered a much improved performance, as compared to their disappointing 4-0 defeat in Gdansk.

Elsewhere, frustrated Italy were held to an unlikely 2-2 draw by Haiti, with the latter scoring two goals within the last five minutes. Netherlands outclassed China, with Wesley Sneijder scoring a pick of goals with a spectacular back heel effort.
