Italian football weekend: Inter leapfrog to the second, Roma move on to the fifth

Juventus stretched their lead to 4 points after beating Palermo in the Sicilian capital city on Sunday. The hosts showed their offensive appetite as well as solid defensive cover throughout the first half of the match. However, Juve’s midfielder Stephan Lichtsteiner scored an opener five minutes into the second half remaining the only goal in the clash. The Turin club maintains the place in Serie A summit with 38 points; Palermo mired close to relegation zone, staying outside it only on goal difference.

The struggling pair Inter and Napoli had a heart-pounding encounter at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday. Both teams barely had time to draw breath from the start but despite all the efforts of the men from Naples to grab three necessary points, Inter pulled off the first half with a two-goal advantage via goals from Fredy Guarin and Diego Milito. Edinson Cavani scored an equalizer for the visitors in the 54th minute. With 33 points from 16 games, Napoli trail Inter just by one point and fall 5 points behind leaders Juventus.
AS Roma 4-2 Fiorentina
It was a proud day for Roma as they beat prominent Fiorentina 4-2 on Saturday. Leandro Castan took an early lead for the hosts 7 minutes into the match. Facundo Roncaglia was quick to level in the 14th minute. Roma’s captain Francesco Totti put it on a star turn and built up an unassailable 3-1 lead completing a thumping first-half brace. The Viola cut Roma’s lead via Mounir El Hamdaoui goal in the first moments from the restart but substitute Pablo Osvaldo made his final mark making the scoring 4-2 just one minute from time. Roma leapfrogged to the 5th position in the table leveling on 29 points with the fourth-placed Lazio and sixth-placed Fiorentina.
