Japan became the first team to book the place in 2014 World Cup final stage
Keisuke Honda’s goal from the penalty spot earned Japan a 1-1 draw with Australia and allowed them to become the first team which booked the place in 2014 World Cup final stage.
The hosts needed just a point to get an automatic qualification for 2014 World Cup, but fell behind to Tommy Oar goal with eight minutes to go. The referee awarded the penalty after McKay’s handball in the penalty area deep into injury time. Keisuke Honda kept a cool head to score from the spot and send his side into 2014 World Cup final stage for the fifth time in a row.
The draw means Japan are topping Asian qualifying Group B, seven points ahead of the closest rivals Australia which guarantees them one of the top two positions. Meanwhile Australia need a victory in their remaining game to progress to the 2014 World Cup.
