Manchester United crowned Premier League champions
Robin Van Persie’s brilliant hat-trick earned Manchester United a comfortable 3-0 victory over struggling Aston Villa and won them the record-breaking 20th Premier League title with four games to go.
It was highly symbolic that it was Van Persie, who became the hero of the match in the game that brought United their Premier League title. The Dutchman has been recognized by City’s boss Mancini as the key factor in United’s successes this season, with the Citizens failing to defend the title they won in style last season. Van Persie’s goals have earned United at least 30 points of their Premier League campaign.
The summer signing from Arsenal is currently leading goal scoring charts with 24 goals to his name, outstripping second-placed Luis Suarez by one goal. Given that the Uruguayan could be facing retrospective suspension for biting his opponent in the Sunday’s clash against Chelsea, Van Persie could claim the Golden Boot award this season.
Van Persie’s opening goal just 90 second into the first half showed signs of things to come. He has broken the deadlock with an easy finish from Giggs’ cross. The Dutchman netted a fabulous over-the-shoulder volley from the edge of the box from Rooney’s pass from halfway in the 13th minute. There are no prizes for guessing who netted the third of the game. RVP completed his hat-trick with a fine close-range finish in the 33rd minute of the game.
The win allowed the Red Devils came 16 points clear of second-placed cross-town rivals with 4 games to go to reclaim the Premier League title.
Robin Van Persie could not hide his delight with winning his first Premier League title. He said: “It didn’t really matter who scored as long as we won this game and we did win this game. From the first minute everyone played well and everyone wanted it. It was a great to score so early and it was a fantastic game of football. I’m very happy but it’s weird. I had to wait for so long for my first title and it’s a great feeling.”
Wayne Rooney recognized it was last year’s Man City’s win of Premier League crown that gave the players additional incentive to reclaim the title this season. he said: “It’s what we’ve worked all year for and we’ve fully deserved it. We won this game in the first half and it is a fantastic night for us. When you lose the title, it’s hard to take and the way we did it wasn’t a nice feeling last time so we’ve all dug in deep and all worked together and done fantastic to put ourselves in the position to finish the job off.
“You know how football is so you never take anything for granted so we worked hard and thankfully now it’s done. The manager has great desire and a winning mentality. We all buy into that and want to do well for the club,” he added.
