Materazzi included Zidane in his all-time team

Materazzi included Zidane in his all-time team

Ahead of the international friendly between Italy and France the former Italian center back Marco Materazzi named his all-time team: Julio Cesar, Maicon, F. Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chivu, Gattuso, Stankovich, De Rossi, Zidane, Cassano, Eto’O. Materazzi’s decision to include legendary Frenchman Zinedine Zidane may raise a few eyebrows among the football fans, as the infamous incident between the two players in 2006 cost France the World Cup trophy.

It is to be recalled that during the 2006 World Cup final Zidane headbutted the Italian center back in the chest (according to Zidane, Marco insulted his mother) and was sent off by the referee in the 110th minute of the game. The Frenchman did not take part in the penalty shoot-out, which was won by the Italians.

However the inclusion of Zidane in all-time team was neither a mockery nor stirring up enmity ahead of the clash between two nations. Materazzi was surprisingly nice about Zidane in his recent interview in Undici TV Show. In particular he said: “Zidane will always have a special place in my heart. After all, he helped me win a World Cup. I don’t think about the headbutt, only the trophy I lifted later that night. One day I would like to play with Zidane in one team. The Frenchman is one of the five best players in the history of football.”
