Mexico have won Olympic men's football gold medal

Mexico have their first ever Olympic football gold, Brazil are silver medalists and Korea won the bronze medal.

Mexico’s football gold is their first gold at these Olympic Games. Oribe Peralta struck just 29 seconds after the whistle and his second goal secured a 2-1 win over Brazil despite Hulk’s injury-time consolation goal.

On the eve of the game against Brazil Peralta said that they can beat everyone and he was true. ‘Our objective was to win the gold medal and it’s a genuine reward for all the hard work that’s been put in over recent years,’- said Peralta.

Brazil still unable to break the spell of the Olympics with no gold medals in the history so far.

Korea ‘dream team’ won the bronze medal with a 2-0 victory over Japan. Goals from Arsenal’s Park Chuyoung and captain Koo Jacheol led them to first Olympic Football medal. They had never progressed to the Olympics quarter-finals before.

‘I believe we have been one of the best at the Olympics and to be called a dream team, I am very proud of that,’- said Korea’s head coach Hong Myung Bo.
