Napoli fined and deduced 2 points over betting scandal

Napoli players Gianluca Grava and Paolo Cannavaro were banned for six months by the disciplinary commission while ex-Napoli goalkeeper Matteo Gianello has received 3 years and 3 months ban over the bets placed on a game with Sampdoria two years ago.

Gianello was charged with fixing the result of the game with Sampdoria in 2010 with a view to bet on Sampdoria’s win (they secured 1-0 victory which allowed them reaching the Champions League qualifying round). He was charged with attempting to involve Grava and Cannavaro, however both players refused.

Grava and Cannavaro were charged with concealing the information about the potential match-fixing.

Napoli slipped from the third to fifth spot in Serie A due to 2-points penalty and currently lagging 10 points behind the leaders Juventus. The club was also fined €70,000.

Napoli said they would appeal against the decision.
