Pirlo set to retire after 2014 World Cup

Italy and Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo admitted he plans to retire from international football after the 2014 World Cup.

Pirlo was an integral element of the Italy side that lifted World Cup trophy in 2006, after they have beaten France in a penalty shoot-out. The 33-year-old led Italy to the final of Euro 2012. Despite Pirlo still having what it takes to play against high-profile oppositions, he is convinced it is time to hang his boots to make way for the next generation of talent.

The midfielder said: “In 2014 I’ll stop with the national team. I think the World Cup will be my last event in the Azzurri jersey. It’s important to leave space for young players.

“At club level, I’ll continue for as long as I have the passion and feel I am important. When that isn’t the case, I’ll be the first to move myself out,” he added.
