Premier League Matchday 24 fixtures preview: Arsenal vs Liverpool

Premier League Matchday 24 fixtures preview: Arsenal vs Liverpool

The clash between the bitter rivals is undoubtedly the key fixture of the Matchday 24. Currently the Gunners are still lagging 4 points behind the top-four, and desperately need a win to live up the season expectations and qualify for the Champions League. Meanwhile the hosts will be hoping to redeem themselves after the humiliating FA Cup 3-2 defeat at the hands of Oldham.

Recent Arsenal form

After suffering two defeats against Man City and Chelsea Arsenal pulled themselves together and delivered decent performances against West Ham (5-1) in London derby and Brighton (3-2 with Giroud scoring two goals).

Recent Liverpool form

As Sturridge and Suarez put in an excellent display against Norwich, pundits started discussing the chances of Liverpool finishing in the top-four. However these conversations came too early to say the least, which was proved by shocking Reds’ 3-2 defeat against Oldham.

Arsenal team news

Thomas Vermaelen is set to return after missing the FA Cup game with Brighton because of ankle injury. Mikel Arteta has returned to light training following his two-weeks absence with the calf injury, however he is unlikely to take part in the Wednesday’s fixture as he lacks full match fitness. Francis Coquelin and Lukasz Fabianski are on long-term injury list and will definitely miss the game, while Gervinho is on an international duty with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool team news

Brendan Rodgers is likely to shakeup his squad following the defeat against minnows Oldham and drop some of the younger players from the first-team. Pepe Reina will make much-anticipated return into the first XI after spending several weeks on the sidelines with a hip injury. Martin Kelly is Liverpool long-term absentee and is expected to be back only by the end of the March.

Footballtop.com prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
