Premier League news: Chelsea beat Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal finish the year on top

Jose Mourinho is still unbeaten at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea beat Liverpool by 2-1.

Brendan Rodgers suffered another defeat from direct title rivals in three days after The Blues had come from behind to finish the year on the rise. Martin Skrtel opened the scoring just three minutes from the start but Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto’o responded on 17 and 34 minutes to kick The Reds out of the top 4 before The New Year. Both clubs faced injury problems as Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Joe Allen and Mamadou Sakho were ruled out during the match.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United all got narrow wins to finish the year in good mood. However, Arsenal will be without Mesut Ozil for a couple of weeks, while Wayne Rooney remains a doubt for Tottenham clash at Old Trafford on 1 January.

The Spurs celebrate their first home win under Tim Sherwood against Stoke City.

Everton bounce back after a disappointing home loss to Sunderland and take three points against Southampton courtesy of goals from Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku.

The teams have now played half of the games and the title race, let alone the top-4 competion, has never been so intense. On the first day of 2014 the clubs will start the Premier League second round and Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur is the main highlight of the day.
