Premier League results: Aston Villa 1-2 Chelsea and other matches
Chelsea claimed Champions League qualification by beating relegation-threatened Villans 2-1. The highlight of the game was Lampard’s double that allowed him overtaking made him Chelsea all-time top goal scorer.
Christian Benteke opened the scoring in the 15th minute after a brilliant run. Things went from bad to worse for the Blues after Ramires was shown a second yellow card for a high boot challenge on Agbonlahor right before the half-time whistle. Benteke has been sent off for the same foul 10 minutes into the second half. Lampard scored his 202nd goal to level the scoring in the 61st minute. Lamps rounded off Chelsea’s victory with a fine strike in the 88th minute.
The victory allowed Chelsea securing the third-place finish. They are currently finding themselves in the third spot, three points clear of the closest rivals Tottenham and just game remaining. Taking into account Chelsea’s superior goal-difference (35 vs 19) Tottenham will be unable to catch the cross-town rivals even if they win their last game, while the Blues slip to a defeat.
