Real Madrid claim the Spanish Supercup

Real Madrid claim the Spanish Supercup

Real Madrid might be sluggish at the start of the season in La Liga. Jose Mourinho might be telling off his players blaming them for poor performance. Barcelona might be superb in friendly matches and first games of the Primera. Tito Vilanova might be getting a warm welcome at Camp Nou for a decent start. But one game can turn everything upside down. For this is not a regular game. This is El Clasico.

Barcelona could not feel secure after a narrow lead gained last week at home, but still it was the Royal club that needed to score. And it looked like Real had no problems with motivation offering a stunning tempo in the first half of the match that Blau Grana was definitely not expecting. Surprisingly, Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique looked like average Spanish defenders stunned by attempts from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo after distant hit-and-hope passes.

With Adriano Correia dismissed in the middle of the first half for a reckless foul preventing Ronaldo from another rendez-voux with Victor Valdes it seemed like Barcelona was meant to be humiliated by their arch-rivals on the night. But this is El Clasico. There is no way for easy life for any team anyway. You can hardly trust both the managers who had asked not to overestimate the importance of the Super Cup.

Several minutes to the end of the first half Lionel Messi reduced the difference with a stunning free-kick leaving Iker Casillas baffled. Just in time for a 10-men Barcelona having a full second half to play.

The second 45 minutes comprised much action and plenty of chances both for Barcelona to equalize with Andres Iniesta propelling the attacks and for Real to enlarge the lead. Still, with the new signings Alex Song and Luca Modric introduced to their first derby, no team managed to score again and 4-4 on aggregate meant Real Madrid grabbed the Spanish Cup on away goals. And you can bet it was not for the Cup, it was for beating Barcelona and reviving the hopes for a good season.

Must give credits to Real for the first 30 minutes - good job. But still can't realize why Barca was not ready for such a rush....??? That's the first time I remember Barca struggling...
