Sampdoria took an early surprise lead via Gianni Munari scoring in the 20th minute. However, the South American trio Diego Milito, Rodrigo Palacio and Fredy Guarin made it 3-1 in the second half. But the visitors fought to the last and Brazilian forward Éder powered in the second goal for Sampdoria in injury-time.
