Several thoughts on Manchester derby

Several thoughts on Manchester derby

Man City have not been beaten for about two years (since 20 December, 2010) at the Etihad Stadium and they desperately hoped to continue their unbeaten record at the expense of Man Utd. However the Red Devils produced an excellent display to secure somewhat lucky win over the “noisy neighbors” and move six points clear of their rivals.

It is to be recalled that Man City managed to bridge the eight-point gap last season and claim the Premier League title. However, Sir Alex Ferguson will do utmost to guarantee that history will not repeat itself this season and the win over Man City could serve as good evidence of the seriousness of his intentions.

By and large the Manchester derby has met the fans’ expectations. That was a lovely, beautiful aggressive game. Now that the dust has almost settled from the game at the Etihad and the frustrated Man City supporters have calmed down and put the good face on the matter it is time to consider some of the most significant events occurred during the Manchester derby.

Wayne Rooney – man of the match

Wayne Rooney’s has wowed Man Utd fans with the eye catching performance yesterday. His energy and pressure, Scholesian cross-field balls and clinical finishing have deservedly earned him the man of the match award with two goals being the icing on the cake. Besides being main attacking threat to The Citizens, Wayne Rooney has also fulfilled defensive duties helping his team-mates at the back. Again and again Rooney was putting the additional pressure on Man City’s midfielders Barry, Silva and Yaya Toure to deny the space for creativity.

Man Utd’s clinical finishing the difference

Man Utd have put the opposition’s defense to the sword scoring on three of their three goal attempts. The Red Devils could also complain on referee’s decision to disallow Young’s goal in the 60th minute of the game which was clearly onside. Sir Alex Ferguson has instructed his players to stick to counterattacking style of play instead of seeking of possession domination and such a strategy proved effective thanks to the clinical finishing ability in front of goal.

Mancini’s decision to pick Balotelli was a mistake

Mancini may have tried to take Sir Alex Ferguson by surprise by including Balotelli upfront but such a decision proved ineffective. Balotelli has again demonstrated unallowable carelessness and was substituted by Carlos Tévez shortly after the break. Tévez’s match-winning mentality has made an almost immediate impact and helped The Citizens to get back in the game.

Man City lost the midfield battle

Yaya Touré has scored again on Sunday and this may be interpreted misleading as though Man City’s midfield was as right as rain. But do not be fooled! Man Utd’s counterattacks cut The Citizens’ midfield like a knife through butter while neither Touré nor Barry playing in deep positions were able to prevent any of the goals. At the same time Nasri and Silva struggled to create chances as Man Utd were effectively closing down.

Shameful scenes overshadow Manchester derby

Unfortunately the beautiful game was marred by the shameful scenes of violence. Rio Ferdinand was hit by a coin which cut his eyebrow and confronted by a fan during the celebration of the match-winning Van Persie’s goal deep into the injury time. Man City have issued a formal apology to the Man Utd skipper. All in all nine people were charged after the violent incidents during the Manchester derby.

Another memorable scene of the Manchester derby came as Tévez booted Carrick up the backside in the dying stages of the game and was surprisingly not shown the red card.
