Sunderland close to signing Cabral

Sunderland are on the verge of signing Basel midfielder Cabral on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old Swiss of Cabo Verde origin has been ever-present in Basel this season, making 45 appearances and setting up two goals in all competitions. His contract with the Swiss side is due to expire next month and he is free to enter the negotiations with other clubs.

New Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio is keen to strengthen its side in a bid to secure the mid-table spot next season. The Italian is determined to add quality players in every line. Although Cabral lacks quality to establish himself as an indispensable member of the squad he could certainly be useful due to his versatility, as he may play be employed either as midfielder or as centre back.

Cabral has represented Switzerland on youth level and holds a European passport.
