Sunderland sack Paolo Di Canio

Sunderland have decided to part ways with Italian specialist Paolo Di Canio after a 0-3 loss to West Bromwich Albion.

Di Canio, who was appointed in March, completed the emergency task to save the team from relegation and stayed in the club for the season 2013/2014. He was given a hefty sum to spend on new players and brought in 14 new names, including the likes of Jozy Altidore, Emanuele Giaccherini, Vito Mannone, Fabio Borini. However, the new players have seemingly not been able to settle so far and Sunderland lost four out of five starting games of the season and got just one point in a draw with Southampton.

Now the board looks for a new manager and Tony Pulis, Roberto Di Matteo are among the likely replacements.
