Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur excel in Europa League

Premier League sides Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur celebrated comfortable victories over Valencia and Tromso in the first round of Europa League.

Jermain Defoe, who doesn’t get chances to compete in domestic league, scored a first-half brace to give Spurs the lead and Christian Eriksen added a stylish strike four minutes before time.

Swansea have beaten Valencia at Mestalla in a match that had been vastly influenced by Adil Rami’s sending off 10 minutes into the game. Michael Laudrup’s side, that included more Spanish players than Valencia, left no chances to reckless Bats.

Wigan Athletic earned a draw in Belgium against Zulte Waregem.
