UEFA Champions League Group G and H

Wednesday’s Champions League matches turned out a nightmare for some and a luck for others.

Group G

FC Barcelona gained their three points after a 3-2 victory over FC Spartak Moskva at Camp Nou. Cristian Tello netted an opener after 14 minutes but Dani Alves cancelled it out with an own goal before the half-hour mark, making it 1-1. In the 59th minute Romulo brought Spartak Moskva ahead. It was Lionel Messi, who made a difference. Barca’s talisman helped them to evade this 2-1 deficit with two strikes in the last 18 minutes and secured this narrow lead.

Celtic FC and SL Benfica claimed a point each after a goalless draw at Celtic Park, which was the only goalless draw of Wednesday night.

Group H

Manchester United FC earned a 1-0 win against Galatasaray AŞ thanks to Michael Carrick’s early goal. Carrick gave United the lead in the 7th minute and that was enough to secure three points. The Turkish side were close several times but Nordin Amrabat and Hamit Altintop missed their chances hitting the bar, while Nani missed a penalty in the second period and in general Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were not convincing enough.

Romanian champions CFR 1907 Cluj saw off SC Braga with a surprising 2-0 victory in their Champions League campaign opener at the Estadio-AXA. Two first-half goals from Rafael Bastos and good performance throughout the match ensured the Romanians three points.
