UEFA Champions League: Group G and H results
Group G
Spartak Moskva 0-3 Barcelona
Barca with their 12 points in Group G booked a place in the round of 16 after a thrilling win over Spartak at Luzhniki on 20 November. Daniel Alves took an early lead for the team in the 16th minute and Lionel Messi scored a thumping brace still in the first half of the clash. The Catalonians ended any hopes of the Russian side to qualify as they are firmly entrenched at the bottom of the pool with only 3 points and just one game ahead.
Benfica 2-1 Celtic
Benfica’s striker Ola John opened the scoring just 7 minutes into the game, however, Giorgos Samaras leveled with a header in the 32nd. The atmosphere was electric at Lisbon stadium as the Scottish champions needed just to retain the draw in order to pass to the next stage, meanwhile Benfica strove for victory to get this chance. Celtic barely had time to draw breath from the restart until Ezequiel Garay volleyed his winning goal 19 minutes from time. As a result, both teams are level on 7 points in Group G and both have chances to qualify. Matchday 6 on 5 December will set the record straight.
Group H
Galatasaray 1-0 Manchester United
Galatasaray reinforced their hopes to qualify to the knock-out stage after breaking down Manchester United 1-0. It was Burak Yilmaz who edged the visitors with his goal in the 53rd minute. The Turkish side is now level on 7 points with CFR 1907 Cluj in Group H. The final showdowns of Matchday 6 will determine the winner.
CFR Cluj 3-1 Braga
Cluj came back from the dead beating Braga 3-1. Rui Pedro put in a star turn striking a tremendous hat-trick during the first 33 minutes of the clash. Alan’s sole response didn’t save the game for Braga who mired at the bottom of the group with only 3 points.
