The way to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League

The way to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League

Group E

FC Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Chelsea FC
The Brazilian duo, Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho, scored early goals in each half leaving the European champion behind. All Di Matteo’s men could do was a late consolation, netted by Oscar. So the Ukrainian champion ensured a deserved three points at the Donbass Arena and top the group midway through the group stage.

FC Nordsjælland 1-1 Juventus
The Danes and the Italians notched a point after two goals scored in the second half. Mikkel Beckmann opened the score early in the second half and Mirko Vucinic netted an 81-minute equalizer. The Italian champion demonstrates a brilliant capability to come from behind to tie up matches this season.

Group F

FC BATE Borisov 0-3 Valencia CF
Valencia ended a fairy-tale start of the group stage for the Belarusian champion with a 3-0 win in Minsk. The Spanish side earned their three points via Roberto Soldado’s excellent performance as he converted a penalty shortly before the interval and then added two more.

LOSC Lille 0-1 FC Bayern München
Bayern Munich secured a 1-0 victory over Lille in France. Thomas Müller’s penalty brought Bayern back on track after their stunning loss to BATE two weeks ago.

Group G

FC Spartak Moskva 2-1 SL Benfica
Rafael Carioca gave FC Spartak Moskva the lead on the 3rd minute and their Portuguese opponents leveled the score via Lima’s goal but shortly before the halftime Benfica’s Jardel Nivaldo Vieira, pressed by Ari, scored an own goal, helping Spartak with three points.

FC Barcelona 2-1 Celtic FC
Barcelona overcame Celtic at the Camp Nou in virtue of Alba’s stoppage-time winner. Celtic got a surprising lead on the 18th minute via Giorgios Samaras’s header, deflected off Mascherano and passed beyond Valdes. Andres Iniesta leveled right at the end of the first half and Alba doubled the score at the very dying minute of the injury time. Despite Barcelona had the lion’s share of possession (90%), it was difficult for Tito Vilanova’s side to convert their obvious hegemony into goals.

Group H

Manchester United FC 3-2 SC Braga
Manchester United FC came from two behind to secure their three points. Alan gave SC Braga two-goal lead within twenty minutes of the first half. And Sir Alex Ferguson’s men ended the first half with one goal from Javier Hernández. The situation changed not in ‘Fergie time’, as it often happens in United’s fashion, but on the 62nd minute via Jonny Evans’s goal, restoring the parity, and Javier Hernández’s winner, scored 15 minutes from time, which ensured the third straight victory in Group H.

Galatasaray AŞ 1-1 CFR 1907 Cluj
CFR 1907 Cluj are placed second in the group with 4 points after 1-1 draw against Galatasaray AŞ.
