Wayne Rooney revealed the reasons for his desire to leave in the summer

One of the main summer sagas was about Wayne Rooney’s future as he looked set on a transfer to Chelsea. Some pundits claimed he lacked appreciation from Sir Alex Ferguson, some thought he did not want to play under David Moyes and would like to join Jose Mourinho.

In an interview before the crucial match against Montenegro the striker of the national team revealed his discontent was purely due to playing position change, which saw him perform in midfield rather than in attack.

“Everyone at the club knew where I wanted to play and I think that’s why I was disappointed. I got told to play in midfield and I didn’t want to. I just think there had to come a point when, for my own career, I had to be a bit selfish really.
“I actually felt when I played in midfield I did okay, but I didn’t want to play there. I’ve had no problem in the past playing out of position. But I felt I deserved the right to play in my position and that wasn’t happening.

Rooney hinted that now that he is back in attack again he is happy at Old Trafford. He also noted that trainings under Moyes have become much more intense.
“Honestly the training has been so hard. We’ve done a lot of different types of training – a lot more longer running, quicker running, sharper running. That’s really benefited me. I feel as fit as I ever have done.”
