Wigan lift FA Cup after an unlikely 1-0 win over Man City

Super-sub Ben Watson scored a match-winning goal in the dying stages of the game to earn Wigan an eyebrow-raising 1-0 win over ten-man Man City in FA Cup final at Wembley.

The result was arguably the biggest shock in English football since Wimbledon outplayed Liverpool 1-0 back in 1988. Relegation-threatened Wigan were the better side for the large periods of the game, with Callum McManaman being close to breaking the deadlock in the 7th minute. However he saw his shot denied by Hart. Tevez was probably the best City’s player on the pitch, but his profligacy meant he was not able to convert the chances into goals. The things went from bad to worse for the Citizens when Zabaleta was sent for an early shower for a late challenge on McManaman in the 82nd minute. Watson came off the bench in the 82st minute to score an excellent header from Maloney’s delivery in the 89th minute.

The Latics won their FA Cup in a first appearances in the final, however they are yet to confirm their Premier League status. Currently they are sitting in the 18th place, trailing 17th-placed Sunderland by 4 points with a game in hand. They face Arsenal and Aston Villa in remaining two games.
