Neymar scored twice on the opening day to put Brazil past Croatia amid controversial penalty decision.

Marcelo’s own goal 11 minutes into the game became the first goal of 2014 World Cup as Croatia left home crowd bemused. Selecao main star Neymar equalized in a counter-attack on 29 minutes to relieve the tension on and off the pitch. It went on as a game of equal opportunities before the Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura bougth Fred’s dive and awarded a penalty. Neymar converted despite Stipe Pletikosa’s nice effort and made a fine bid for the Golden Boot award. Oscar added a third goal in added time to make it 3-1 for the hosts in the opening match. The whole country went on to celebrate the success, and the Croatians showed great resilience that could see them get points from remaining games.
