World Cup holders Spain were shred apart by inspired Holland 1-5.

If there is one word to describe Spain’s performance in the opening match of 2014 World Cup it is miserable. Vicente Del Bosque’s men looked like an an ageing squad of players who met each other for the first time. Strongly-booed forward Diego Costa took maximum out of minimal contact on 26 minutes to earn a penalty that was converted by Xabi Alonso. However, that was all the world champions were capable of that night. Daley Blind made two wonderful assists for Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben to put Netherlands in front. Stefan de Vrij netted a third goal that probably should not have stood after a foul on Iker Casillas. Still, the Dutch went on to thrash Furia Roja with Robin van Persie robbing Iker Casillas and Arjen Robben humiliating Spanish defence another time. That was nothing but the coldest shower for holding champions as they now must beat feisty Chile and Australia in two remaining games.

This defeat is remembered as the destruction of the "invincible Armada".
