Greece had a rocky start with Kone and Karnezis substituted in the space of 24 minutes from the starting whistle. Andreas Samaris, who came on as a sub, opened the scoring just before the break. Wilfried Bony equalized on 74 minutes as The Ivory Coast were set for taking the runner-up position in the group behind Colombia. However, an injury time penalty for a foul on Samaras, converted by the Celtic man, saw Greece win the crucial clash and scrape to the round of 16. Fernando Santos’ squad are now facing surprise pack Costa Rica.

Colombia demolished Japan 4-1 to complete a perfect record on group stage. Juan Cuadrado, Jackson Martinez twice and James Rodriguez scored for the American side. Shinji Okazaki pulled one back for Japan. Jose Pekerman’s men will take on Uruguay, who will likely be without their star man Luis Suarez as he is set for a lenghty ban for biting an opponent.
