World Cup. Group D. Miserable Italy lose to Uruguay

Italy fell to their own stupid tactics, relying on a potential goalless draw that would have seen them through.

A match that should have been a relentless clash for promotion between the two fine selections, turned out to be arguably the most boring match of the World Cup, with Italy hardly trying to attack and killing the time and Uruguay unable to create a piece of agressive football. Claudio Marchisio was sent off on 59 minutes for a nasty tackle on the opponent, but it hardly changed the run of the game. With some fifteen minutes from time Italy ceased the slightest attempts to get out of their half and were punished by Diego Godin, who fired home after a corner. Andrea Pirlo then tried to revive Squadra Azzurra, but it was too late. Italy join England as group losers and Cesare Prandelli is probably the man to blame.

Yet, the miserable display from both sides was shadowed by another piece of disgusting tricks from Luis Suarez. The Liverpool striker has bitten Giorgio Chiellini, but escaped any punishment from the referee. If FIFA take retrospective action, Suarez might be suspended from play-off matches.
