Abel Hernández is a Uruguayan footballer born on 8 August 1990 in Pando, Uruguay. He currently plays as a forward for Italian side Palermo.
Ending up his football grooming at Central Español in 2006, Abel, also nicknamed La Joya, signed a professional contract with the club. He got off to a flying start with his striking 5 goals in the first four appearances for the Uruguayan side. Overall, Hernández scored 9 goals in 30 games during his two-year spell at the team.
A promising striker spent the 2008/09 season at Peñarol where he played as a youth 8 years ago. He shortly established himself as a regular of the first team and scored 3 goals in 8 matches for the club.
In 2009, Abel Hernández moved to Europe to join Italian side Palermo where he plays up today. He made his Serie A debut and scored his maiden goal in a 5-3 defeat to giant Inter Milan on 29 October 2009. His brilliant display for the Rosaneri soon sparked interest of such top clubs as Liverpool, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain.
From 2008 till 2010, Abel Hernández was called up to the Uruguay U-20 squad amassing 6 goals in 10 appearances. He struggled for the team in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring an equalizer against Ghana. Hernández earned his first cap for the Uruguay national team in 2010 and is a regular part of it since then.
