The player started his professional football career at the age of 17, when he debuted with the FC Metallurg Krasnoyarsk in 2000.
During the period from 2002 to 2004, Aleksandr played for FC Tom Tomsk helping them to earn a promotion to the Russian Premier League with a series of eye-catching displays.
In 2005 Kharitonov moved to FC Saturn Moscow Oblast where he initially was the first-team regular, but later lost his status due to the managers reshuffle.
