Aleksei Ionov was born on February 18, 1989 in Kingisepp, the Soviet Union. He currently plays as a midfielder for Dynamo Moscow.
Having passed through Zenit youth system, Aleksei joined the reserve side of FC Zenit St. Petersburg in 2007. Yet, during the 2007/2008 UEFA Cup campaign he featured in 4 matches for the first team and scored two goals. His debut European goal took place in the 93rd minute of the qualifier against FC ViOn Zlaté Moravce. In 2009 he appeared 10 times in the high-flight of the Russian football championship and in 2010 made 11 Premier League appearances and netted two goals during the group stage of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League. On April 17, 2011 he scored his first Russian Premier League goal and on June 14, his left-footed shot in the 12th second of the game against FC Rostov became the quickest goal in Zenit history. He also scored a winner in the 2011 Russian Super Cup match against CSKA, the game ending 1-0 for Zenit.
In January 2012, Aleksei Ionov left for FC Kuban Krasnodar. One year later he switched for ambitious side Anzhi Makhachkala. After just 6 matches for the Dagestani side, Ionov moved to Dynamo Moscow in August 2013.
In the 2006-2008 period the midfielder represented the Russia national U-17 and U-19 teams. In February 2009 he was capped for the Russia U-21 squad and in March 2011, the player was called up to the Russia national team with which he featured in the starting lineup in a friendly against Quatar. On August 2011, Ionov made his debut for the Russia-2 national football team.
