Aleksei Kozlov was born on November 16, 1986 in Petrozavodsk, the Soviet Union.
When Aleksei was a child, his family moved to Naberezhnye Chelny where he soon started playing football at the youth ranks of a local club FC Zarya. From there he moved to FC Spartak Moscow youth system where he played till 2004.
In 2004, Kozlov embarked on his professional career with ASV Bergedorf 85, where he made 24 appearances for two seasons before moving to another Oberliga representative VfB Lübeck in 2006.
In 2007 the footballer signed a contract with FCKAMAZ Naberezhnye Chelny that at the time represented the Russian First Division. During the first two seasons Kozlov was not given enough playing time but in 2009 he was finally included in the starting eleven of the club. During that season he featured in 32 matches and his bright performance did not pass unheeded among several big-name Russian clubs as FC Rubin Kazan and FC Krylia Sovetov Samara. In August 2010, Kozlov left for FC Kuban Krasnodar.
In 2014 he was offered a contract with Dynamo Moscow.
On August 21, Aleksei made his debut for the new squad featuring as a starter against FC Khimki. On March 13, 2011 he made his Russian Premier League debut in the first-round match against FC Rubin Kazan.
