Aleksei Popov is a Russian central defender, who was born on 7 July 1978. The player possesses double citizenship, Russian and Kazakh, representing the Kazakhstan national team at the international level.
He got his prior football education at the Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserves in Perm. Later he joined his first professional club FC Zvezda Perm in 1995.
In 1996-2008 the player had his first spell with FC Amkar, receiving captain’s armband in the 2007/08 season. In 2003/04 he participated in international fixtures against Kazakhstan and Germany-2 national teams.
In 2008 the player joined FC Rubin Kazan. The club won the Russian Premier League and gained the remarkable victory against the incredible FC Barcelona during the away UEFA Champions League group stage match at Camp Nou that season. In February 2010 Aleksei terminated his contract with the Kazan club by mutual agreement and returned to FC Amkar.
The Football Federation of Kazakhstan offered Popov to represent their national team in 2010. The player accepted the offer and made his debut during the EURO 2012 qualification fixture against the Turkey national team.
