Alex Teixeira Santos is an attacking midfielder for Shakhtar Donetsk. He was born on 6 January 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Alex Teixeira began his football career at the youth team of Duque de Caxias FC. When Alex was 10 years old, his club played a friendly match against the peers from Vasco da Gama. The young player’s performance impressed Vasco da Gama management so much that they immediately proposed Alex to move to their club. Teixeira agreed. At the age of 14 the midfielder started to play for the youngest Brazilian youth team U-15, and attracted the attention of several top European clubs. In 2006 and 2007 two English giants Manchester United and Chelsea wanted to purchase Teixeira, but Vasco da Gama management rejected both offers.
In January 2008 football was finally promoted to the first team of the club. On 10 January Alex made his debut for Vasco da Gama in a friendly against German Hamburg. The match was played within the framework of exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, during which Alex signed for his club on a five-year deal. In 2009 Vasco won Série B and returned to Série A, following its relegation in 2008. The young midfielder’s play contributed to it greatly.
In the winter of 2009 the Brazilian moved to Europe. On 21 December Alex joined Ukrainian Shakhtar Donetsk, which paid €6 million for the Brazilian midfielder. Together with the Miners Alex has become threefold champion of Ukraine, twofold winner of the National Cup and twofold winner of the Ukrainian Super Cup.
Alex played for three different youth teams of Brazil (U-15, U-17 and U-20). In 2005 and 2007 Teixeira became the winner of South American Youth Championship. And in 2009 Teixeira helped his countrymen to become silver medalists at FIFA World Youth Championship. During the tournament the midfielder scored three goals, but failed to score in a penalty shootout, as Ghana prevailed over Brazil.
