Alexander Esswein was born on March 25, 1990 in Worms, Germany.
Having started his football career in the youth academies of TSV Neuleiningen, VfR Frankenthal and SV Waldhof Mannheim Alexander joined the youth team of FC Kaiserslautern in 2002. On December 17, 2007, Esswein made his first appearance for the senior squad that was at the time in the second Bundesliga. Then he came on in the 63rd minute of a 2-1 loss to FC Köln.
In summer 2008, the striker transferred to VfL Wolfsburg and was a starter of the reserve team. He made 8 appearances for the main team during 2 seasons.
In August 2010, Esswein moved to the 3rd league team Dynamo Dresden. In July 2010, he left for FC Nürnberg and thereby returned to the top flight of the German championship. In 2014 the striker moved to Augsburg.
Esswein was a part of the U-17, U-18, U-19 and U-20 German national teams and since 2011 the striker has been representing the U-21 squad. In 2007, Alexander together with the U-17 team won the bronze medal of the 2007 U-17 World Cup. There he netted 2 against Trinidad and Tobago and scored the winner in the third-place playoff versus Ghana.
