Alexander Madlung was born on 11 July 1982 in Braunschweig.
At the age of 6 he began his youth career in local Sportfreunde Ölper where he played as an attacking midfielder. Thanks to his physical strength and field vision Alexander was on try-out in Lower Saxony at the age of 11, saying nothing of the German top-clubs’ ‘scouts’ who always poked him in the eye. Thus, in 1993 he played for VfL Wolfsburg and then joined local Eintracht Braunschweig where he played until 1999.
At the age of 17 Madlung moved to Hertha BSC and soon played for the club in 1-0 aggregate win over Scottish Aberdeen FC in the first round of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup. Shortly after that he received a professional contract and made his 2002/03 Bundesliga debut in a 2-0 win over FC Energie Cottbus, thus getting a toehold in the first team. On 8 November 2003 a German defender scored his maiden goal in a match against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
On 23 May 2006 Alexander Madlung was signed by VfL Wolfsburg where he mostly played in substitution, warming the bench all the other time. Such a deal couldn’t but heat up the relationships between Madlung and club’s management. However, afterwards he cemented his place in the first team and the conflict was dispelled. Having played almost 200 matches for the club, Madlung left the squad in the summer 2013. In January 2014 Madlung joined Eintracht Frankfurt.
Alexander Madlung earned his international cap on 28 August 2006. He made his national team debut in a match against Georgia on 7 October 2006.
