Alexander Stephan was born on September 15, 1986 in Erlangen.
Stephan started playing football at ASV Niederndorf but at the age of 9 joined the youth team of FC Nürnberg. In 2004 the keeper was shortlisted for the reserve side of the senior team and thereby made the first steps in his professional football career. In the season 2005/06, Stephan featured 10 times and in the season 2006/07 he made 33 appearances whereupon the keeper signed a professional contract with the club valid till 2008.
On November 28, 2009, the goalkeeper debuted for the first team in the game versus SC Freiburg and since then he featured in 4 more matches having in all conceded 12 goals in 5 games. The managers did not consider the result satisfactory and made Alexander a second-choice keeper. A bit later a young keeper Patrick Rakovsky provoked a competition for the position of a second goalkeeper and Stephan lost because of the injury. But soon Rakovsky picked up similar trauma and Alexande returned to the second-choice position.
All in all Alexander Stephan appeared in 13 games for the first team and 91 times for the second one. Nowadays he is competing with Patrick Rakovsky for the position of the second-choice keeper.
As an international the keeper made only one appearance for the German national under-19 team which remained his latest.
