Alexandru Gaţcan was born on 27 March 1984 in Chisinau, Moldova.
In 2003, the footballer started to play for FC Unisport-Auto Chişinău. Gaţcan performed in one game in the Moldova First League, thereafter he was invited in for trial. The player moved to FC Spartak Moscow, where he was to play for the youth team.
Alexandru played in 14 games, scoring 2 goals in the youth team Spartak. In the 2005 season, the footballer started to play for FC Spartak Chelyabinsk. In 2006, he moved to FC Rubin Kazan. During performances for Rubin, Gaţcan was called up to the National squad. Alexandru played 2 qualifying games in 2006 FIFA World Cup and 8 games in UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying tournament.
In August 2008, Gaţcan signed a contract with FC Rostov.
