Álvaro Saborío is a Costa Rican striker currently playing for Real Salt Lake in the MLS. He was born on 24 November 1984 in Cartago, Costa Rica.
Álvaro embarked on professional career with his native Saprissa in 2001. He shortly became a pillar of the team thanks to his outstanding goalscoring ability. Saborío pulled off the 2002/03 season as the club’s top scorer with 27 goals in all competitions. He recorded two Primera División titles and the 2005 CONCACAF Champions' Cup together with the club.
In 2006, Saborío moved to Switzerland where he joined FC Sion. He was an instrumental player during the 2008/09 season as his side won the Swiss Cup. In the 2009/10 campaign, the Costa Rican forward found himself on loan at the English Bristol City. In March 2010, he moved on loan to Real Salt Lake in the MLS. Thanks to his prolific performances Saborío was signed on a permanent deal by Real Salt Lake and plays for the club today.
Álvaro Saborío is a regular international for Costa Rica since 2002. It’s a tidbit that he was the first ever player to score a goal during the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica opening match on 26 March 2011.
