The Dutch specialist fielded arguably the strongest side from the starting whistle and presented a new, pretty much a 3-5-2 formation that he used with Netherlands in Brazil. Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all played in defence, Ander Herrera and Darren Fletcher paired in midfield, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia started as wingers, while Juan Mata assisted Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney up front. Welbeck opened the scoring after just thirteen minutes and Wayne Rooney netted a brace before the break. At half-time Van Gaal substituted all the players but Herrera and Fletcher, and debutant Reece James, who replaced Luke Shaw, scored a double. With minutes left to play, United outcast Ashley Young added a brace to complete a 7-0 drubbing.

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 08:31:20 +0000 Leon Smolski 290593 at Ander Herrera signs for Manchester United

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera signs for Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao.

The Red Devils seal a swoop for 24-year old Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, following a year of ineffective attempts. He becomes the first signing of new manager Louis Van Gaal, who is still enjoying Holland’s successfuul run in Brazil.

Herrera said in an official statement: “Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true. I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the UEFA Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far. I have joined United to do all I can to help the team reach the club’s objectives. Having arrived on Tuesday, I’m excited to now be living in Manchester and I can’t wait for my first game in United’s famous red shirt. I will never forget my time with Athletic Club and I’d like to thank the fans and staff for all their support and, above all, wish all my fantastic former team-mates all the best for the future.”

Fri, 27 Jun 2014 07:51:24 +0000 Leon Smolski 278500 at
